Association warns of handing over keys of medical colleges to govt

KATHMANDU: President of the Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges of Nepal Basruddin Ansari has warned of handing over keys of medical colleges to the government.

In a press release issued on Saturday, the association hoped to avert a situation whereby medical colleges would remain shut as the third wave of COVID19 hit the country.

“The patience of private medical college operators is running out and there is no alternative to locking up all our medical colleges,” the statement read.

Stating that the association’s General Secretary Dr. Sunil Sharma had been mistreated on Friday, association President Ansari demanded a halt to such attacks against private-sector medical professionals and stressed strict action against the guilty in the incident.

The statement added there has been a trend of attacking, threatening, and insulting private medical colleges and their operators over the past decade.

“We demand the government to bear responsibility if such attacks are perpetrated against private sector-run colleges, hospitals, and their operators. The private sector should be able to conduct business in a dignified manner,” the statement said.

Ansari said despite requests to government authorities to ensure protection for medical college professionals from various attacks repeatedly, there has been no initiative to this end.

He went on to say that the government was not private-sector friendly citing its treatment of medical college operators in recent days.
