Millennium Development Goal launched in September 2000 by United Nations was a global campaign to galvanize and to reduce extreme poverty and hunger from all ends and means to promote gender equality and reduce child mortality by the target date of 2015.
The MDG addressed the 8 international development goals for the year 2015 that had been established in 2000 following the Millennium Summit held by the UN.
The MDG which comprised of 8 goals were clear, concise, realistic, time-bound, measurable, and easy to communicate that was supported by the MDG Fund which directly and indirectly contributed to its achievement.
On the other hand, Sustainable Development Goal also referred to as “Global Goals for Sustainable Development” comprises 17 global agendas set by United Nations in 2015.
The SDG focused on accomplishing all the 17 goals having different agendas under it to address social and economic issues like Poverty, Hunger, Health, Sanitation, Education, Environment, Global Warming, Gender Equality, Water, Energy, Urbanization, and Social Justice.
Therefore, MDG has set the foundation for SDG to achieve its goal by 2030. Also, Nepal being a member of the UN is a part of this initiative where its successful implementation has helped in building the new avenues for the implementation of SDG planned for 2016-2030.
Be it from national, regional, or local level these goals has been expected to guide Nepal from all perspective and Nepal is aspiring to graduate from the least developed country to a developed one by 2022 with the help of the indicators set by the Government of Nepal in achieving these novel goals.
The challenges are immense, but there are also reasons for hope where a brighter future is possible as we must use the crisis to transform our world and keep our promise to current and future generations for a better outcome as the goals set by SDG to achieve its target by 2030.
As we are already in 2022 what do you think/feel do these goals as set by the concerned authorities, collaborating partners, the government have been successful enough to achieve as per what they expected to.
Or is there any agenda that is still yet to be addressed? Nepal being a developing country can it graduate from a developing to a developed one shortly?
Moreover, the global pandemic that is ongoing for the past 2 years has become another challenge for all of us to deal with it.
It has highly impacted all the chores of our life and has been threatening the decades of development goals and delaying it further.
But then SDGs track was off before the COVID-19 pandemic as the progress that has been made was regarding poverty reduction, maternal and child health, access to electricity, and gender equality that wasn’t enough to achieve the goals as set by achieving SDG by 2030.
Moreover, the other area of development like inequality, lowering carbon emissions, tackling hunger the progress seems to be reversed or stalled as of now because of the ongoing pandemic scenario.
The sustainable Development Goals Report 2021 also outlines some significant impacts in many of the areas that are already apparent and evident among us.
Notwithstanding the global economic slowdown, another concern is the concentrations of major greenhouse gases that continue to increase with the global average temperature reaching about 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels, as a result, the climate crisis has well and truly arrived, along with its impacts that are being felt across the world.
Moreover, the pandemic has also brought immense financial challenges especially for developing countries like Nepal.
The challenges are immense, but there are also reasons for hope where a brighter future is possible as we must use the crisis to transform our world and keep our promise to current and future generations for a better outcome as the goals set by SDG to achieve its target by 2030.
