Nepalis returning in droves from India as COVID cases spike



DHANGADHI: The number of Nepali migrant workers returning home from India is increasing after the infection cases of COVID-19 surged in the southern neighbor, of late.

According to Ganesh Saud, the health desk in-charge of Gauriphanta checkpoint, around 1,000 Nepali migrants are returning to Nepal from this border point on a daily basis.

“The number of Nepali people returning home is increasing after the cases of COVID-19 spiked in India,” said Saud, adding, “Around 2,000 Nepalis are entering Nepal via Gauriphanta, Trinagar, Gaddachauki on a daily basis.”

With the Nepalis returning home in droves from India, the rate of infections is also going up in Sudurpaschim Pradesh.

According to Saud, among those India returnees, 48 people tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday (January 6), 67 were diagnosed with the virus on Friday (January 7) and 71 on Saturday.
