Police arrest 8 students protesting against TU decision

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested eight students protesting in front of the Tribhuvan University Vice Chancellor’s Office demanding the university should withdraw the decision to make the contract teachers permanent.

According to sources, the students of various student groups went to the VC Office and urged the university administration to revoke the faulty decision.

The protestors claim that the government’s decision to change contract-based teachers permanent is against the prevalent laws and is also against the attempts to ensure quality in the university.

The protesting students informed that the arrested youths are kept at the Metropolitan Police Circle office in Kathmandu.

Among the arrested are student leaders Manisha Karki, Sameer Gautam, Shobha Bam, Anil KC, Bipin BK, Ram Naresh Yadav, Praveen Dahal and Tej Prasad Pokharel.

Earlier, TU’s five former vice-Chancellors including Kedar Bhakta Mathema, Kaamal Krishna Joshi, Mahesh Kumar Upadhyaya, Hira Bahadur Maharjan and Navin Prakash Jung Shah issued a statement protesting against TU decision.
