Ending 40 days long row, SC judges agree to hear all kinds of cases

Nepal Bar to continue protest unless CJ Rana's resignation

KATHMANDU: Supreme Court (SC) judges have agreed to carry out hearing on all types of cases almost 40 days after the dispute related to Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana erupted at the apex court.

According to SC sources, SC judges, who had been boycotting benches set by the Chief Justice, agreed to carry out hearing on all types of cases under the condition that they would not be sharing bench with Chief Justice Rana anymore.

Earlier, the judges had agreed to hear all types of cases from December 1 as the Full Court had curtailed the Chief Justice’s prerogatives to allocate benches and decided to adopt lottery system for assigning cases to benches.

Coincidentally, another dispute arose in the court as Chief Justice was hospitalized due to coronavirus infection after he did not inform the court nor did he appoint anyone as the acting chief justice.

The Nepal Bar Association, the umbrella organization of all legal practitioners in the country, had objected to the functioning of the court demanding the acting Chief Justice should be named during Chief Justice Rana’s absence.

Chief Justice Rana got discharged from the hospital Friday.

In the meantime, Nepal Bar has continued its agitation demanding the resignation of the Chief Justice allegedly involved in corruption and seeking share in the cabinet.
