Nepal attending COP 26 with ambitious goals in related field

SCOTLAND: Nepal is attending the 26th Conference (COP26) of the nations to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with documents and reports featuring the country’s ambitious goals in the related field.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is leading the high-level delegation to the UN Climate Change Conference, is scheduled to address the World Leaders Summit to be organized today and tomorrow on the occasion of COP 26.

The Prime Minister will apprise the session that Nepal is working with commitment to implement the Paris Agreement, briefing it about national policy, plans, and programs aims to reduce the risk of climate change.

It may be noted that the October 28 meeting of the Council of Ministers had endorsed important documents such as ‘Nepal’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP: 2021-2050)’, Nepal’s Long-term Strategy to Reduce Carbon Emissions to Net Zero’, and ‘National Framework on the Climate Hazards’.

The policy documents and action plans will be presented with much priority for the coordination, collaboration, and exchange of knowledge at the international forum.

In the Conference, PM Deuba will be shedding light on Nepal’s national commitments along with its goals to reduce carbon emission to net zero by 2045. Of the total energy consumed, Nepal will supply 15 percent from clean energy sources and it will increase forest coverage to 45 percent by 2030.

Nepal has made a policy to spend at least 80 percent of available climate finance in a bid to support local climate works.

Under its national adaption plan, Nepal has launched short-term (2025), mid-term (2030), and long-term (2050) programs.

It includes a total 64 adaptation programs under eight thematic areas and four inter-sectoral areas identified by the National Climate Change Policy, 2019. RSS
