COP26 taking place in Glasgow from today

PM Sher Bahadur Deuba leads Nepali delegation to the World Leaders' Summit



KATHMANDU: The 26th edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) is taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, from today, with representatives from over 190 countries coming together to set their targets on mitigating climate change.

The COP26 summit that brings parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will end on 12 November 2021.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is leading a Nepali delegation to the World Leaders’ Summit.

This year’s session was scheduled to take place in 2020. However, it was postponed following the COVID-19 outbreak.

The UN has been bringing almost every country together for global climate summits called COPs – Conferences of the Parties.

Meanwhile, COP21 is regarded by many as the most important of the last sessions following the Paris Agreement, which was signed at the 2015 UN climate conference in France.

As many as 195 countries that signed the accord committed to taking action against climate change by cutting greenhouse gas emissions by either 2025 or 2030 and limiting climate change to 1.5 degrees.

Meanwhile, PM Deuba met and discussed with the members of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom including Swraj Paul at the Nepali Embassy in London on Saturday.

The meeting focused on further strengthening relations between Nepal and the UK, said Bharat Raj Paudyal, Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepali delegation member.

The attending members of the UK’s Upper House assured their help of all sort to further consolidate relations between the two countries.

The members of the House of Lords reminded that they were raising issues of problems facing Nepal and how the UK could assist with the address.

Saying that he was committed to expanding and promoting bilateral relations, PM Deuba praised continuous supports from the UK government, said Secretary Paudyal.
