KATHMANDU: Guatemalan police rescued 126 illegal migrants, including Nepalis, bound for United States from an abandoned shipping container in the Central American country.
The rescued were trapped inside a container when they were found between the towns of Nueva Concepción and Cocales in Guatemala. They were discovered after locals heard screams coming from the abandoned container in their locality.
The illegal migrants were on their journey to the United States via Central America. They were likely swindled by smugglers who promised them safe passage to the U.S. but abandoned them midway.
“We heard cries and knocks coming from inside the container. We opened the doors and found inside 126 undocumented people: 106 from Haiti, 11 from Nepal and nine from Ghana,” Guatemalan police spokesman Jorge Aguilar told DW.
All the rescued entered Guatemala via Honduras and Guatemalan authorities are preparing to hand them over to authorities in Honduras. Guatemalan authorities said all of them were undocumented.
People, especially from poorer countries, take risky and illegal routes to enter the U.S. in hopes of a better life for themselves and their families.
