KATHMANDU: Experts and stakeholders have suggested that the media should effectively raise the issue of climate change as its impact has severely impacted the lives of common people.
Such feedback was received at an interaction organized by Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (NEFEJ) with the editors of different media outlets on Tuesday.
On the occasion, environmentalist Bhusan Tuladhar said that severe disasters have taken place in the recent years due to climate change and it’s already been late to address those incidents. He urged the media to effectively cover the impact of climate change that have taken toll on public lives.
He also pointed out flaws in the implementation of our policies in regard to climate change. “Even the government is violating some of the policies,” Tuladhar argued.
Another panelist journalist Kunda Dixit said that now climate change has become a political issue and directly linked to people’s lives. Country’s economy, sources of water, human health and others are directly affected from the climate change and they should be sensitized in the media.
Even the life expectancy is decreasing while the country has been spending massively in the imports of petroleum products, Dixit added.
At present, climate change is atop the country’s crisis, he argued.
Another panelist at the program, joint secretary at the Ministry of Forest and Environment Dr Radha Wagle said that the government was preparing for its meaningful presence in the COP-26 to be held in Scotland.
“We have formed 10 thematic committees to make national consensus in our agendas there,” Dr Wage shared.
Also speaking at the program, President of NEFEJ Kosmos Bishwokarma said that plenty of attention should be given while making plans since the development projects advanced without considering environment conservation would invite more harm than the benefit.
