Students Day marked with gusto in capital

KATHMANDU: Students affiliated to various political parties have marked the Students’ Day by organizing various programs in the capital on Wednesday.

The students have been observing this anniversary every year on May 15 (Jestha 1) to mark the students’ movement launched against the then despotic partyless Panchayati regime 55 years ago.

Students from various colleges in the Kathmandu Valley had announced protest programs demanding scrapping of Gorkha Recruitment Center, reinstatement of Free Students Union, scrapping of all forms of unequal treaties and unconditional release of jailed students.

The student leaders of then Free Students Union at Tri-Chandra College had led the movement in the Nepali month Baisakh in 2021 BS.

The then government had used security forces to quell the movement that led to the arrest of as many as 150 student leaders.

A valley-wide strike had started against the arrest of the students which ultimately forced the  government to yield to the students’ demands.
