President confident about increasing census of tigers

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has expressed the confidence that Nepal would be able to increase the population of tigers as per its commitment in the international forum.

In a message today on the occasion of International Tiger Day, President Bhandari said it is a matter of satisfaction to note that Nepal has already taken strides to reach the number of tigers to 250 by 2022, taking the number from 121 in 2010 to 235 in 2020, and expressed the confidence that the target would be met in the remaining period.

With a notable result in tiger conservation, Nepal has been able to give a special message to the world as we celebrate International Tiger Day under the theme ‘Existence of Tiger: Human Responsibility’, she has said in the message.

“The positive result for management of habitat of tigers, control of the poaching and smuggling of the tiger and its body parts were possible due to conservation by the security agencies such as Nepal Army and continuous cooperation and collaboration among the local community in buffer zones, various national and international partner agencies,” the message reads.

Stressing the need to protect the big cats, the President has said, “It is imperative to conserve tigers to reduce the negative impact of the climate change, enable healthy and clean ecology by conserving the biodiversity.”

International Tiger Day is celebrated every year on 29 July to raise awareness for tiger conservation.
