Apex court issues interim order not to appoint Yuvraj Karki as ambassador

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued an interim order asking the government not to implement its decision to recommend former minister Yuvraj Karki as ambassador.

The cabinet meeting held on May 8 had recommended former Minister Karki for the post of ambassador to Bahrain.

However, citing that the Supreme Court had already ordered not to implement the government’s latest directives on appointment of ambassadors 2019, a bench of Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Prakash Kumar Dhungana issued interim order asking the government not to appoint Karki as he did not meet the criteria.

The Directive on the Appointment of Ambassadors 2019 hails completion of graduation level mandatory minimum academic qualification for ambassadors. However, the government amended the directive on May 8, saying that the clause would not apply to a person who has already served as a minister, and recommended former Minister Karki as ambassador on the same day.

The Supreme Court had issued an interim order in the name of government asking it not to implement the amendment of the directive immediately.
