UML preparing to scrap 10th General Convention Organizing Committee

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML is preparing to scrap the 10th General Convention Organizing Committee (GCOC), which was formed by transforming the Central Committee on March 12 earlier this year.

The Standing Committee (SC) meeting held Sunday called the next GCOC meeting on June 30 to dismantle the GCOC, said SC member Kiran Gurung. ”The GCOC meeting called at 11 am on June 30 will revive the Central Committee (CC) and the CC will make further decisions,” he said.

CC member Bishnu Rijal also said preparations were being made to deactivate the GCOC. He said, “The UML will no longer have any temporary structures. The CC will be active in maintaining party unity.”

The GCOC meeting on June 30 will also endorse the 6-point proposal for party unity.

UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had issued a six-point appeal expressing commitments to take the party back to the status of May 16, 2018. However, the disgruntled faction of the party did not take it seriously, stating that the appeal was ambiguous at best.

UML leader in the SC meeting Sunday also stressed party unity. UML leader Prithivi Subba Gurung, who is also former Chief Minister of Gandaki Province, even suggested making senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal another Chairman for the sake of party unity.

To Gurung’s suggestion, UML leaders kept mum and nobody lodged a protest.
