Supreme Court issues interim order not to implement citizenship ordinance



KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an interim order in the name of the government not to implement the Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment), Ordinance, 2021.

A constitutional bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana, Justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Harikrishna Karki, and Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada issued the interim order.

The SC has said that if the federal parliament fails to pass the ordinance, there will be legal complications over the citizenship certificate distributed as per the ordinance.

President Bidhya Bhandari had issued the Ordinance on May 23. A total of six writ petitions were filed against the Ordinance in the SC.

Senior advocates, including Borna Bahadur Karki, Advocates Bishnu Kumari Giri, Ram Bahadur Shahi, Kul Bahadur Bogati and Maulik Jarokilo Party filed the writ petitions.
