KATHMANDU: The Department of Water and Meteorology has recommended halting mountaineering expedition for a week, saying that the powerful cyclone ‘Tauktae’ that started from the Indian Ocean could have an impact in Nepal as well.
The Department has recommended halting mountaineering for a week, saying the weather in the mountains would be bad due to the impact of the cyclone.
Senior meteorologist Barun Poudel said that the Ministry of Tourism has been advised to stop the ascent for at least a week in view of the possible change in the weather and snowfall due to the cyclone.
However, the Ministry of Tourism, on the other hand, has said that it will make a decision based on the situation.
Although the ministry is not in favor of stopping the climb, the department’s information has said that the decision will be taken keeping in mind the safety of the climbers.
The impact of the cyclone will be felt in Nepal from Wednesday. Poudel said that there will be no sunshine this week and there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in Nepal.
He also urged to take special precautions as there will be strong winds and lightning in the far west.
Although heavy rains are expected in the far west and west, light rains are expected in Kathmandu.
Although the cyclone will not have a direct impact in Nepal, the weather will improve from Sunday, the department said.
The cyclone, which started in the Indian Ocean, is currently moving in India at a speed up to 185 kmph.
The cyclone is moving towards Gujarat, damaging coastal areas of Kerala and Mumbai.
It has so far killed six people in India and damaged physical infrastructure.
