KATHMANDU: Chennai Super Kings has climbed atop the points table by defeating Kolkata Night Riders by 18 runs in a cricket match under the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.
Kolkata was bowled out for 202 runs in 19.1 overs while it was chasing a mammoth 221-run target set by Chennai.
With a 31-5 score in 5.2 overs at the initial phase, the tournament took an interesting turn when Pat Cummins and Andre Russell performed brilliantly. Cummins made the highest 66 runs studded with six sixes and four fours off 34 balls and remained unbeaten. Similarly, Russell notched up 54 runs including six sixes and three fours off 22 balls while Dinesh Karthik contributed 40 runs off 24 balls.
To restrict Kolkata from reaching the target, Chennai’s Deepak Chahar grabbed the highest four wickets giving away 29 runs in four overs. Similarly, Lungi Ngidi took three wickets while Sam Curran claimed one wicket of Kolkata.
Earlier, invited to bat first after losing the toss, Chennai notched up 220 runs losing three wickets in 20 overs. Faf du Plessis top-scored with 95 runs including nine fours and four sixes off 60 balls. Similarly, Ruturaj Gaikwad made 64 runs including six fours and four sixes off 42 balls while Moeen Ali contributed 25 runs.
In reply, Kolkata’s Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell took one wicket each of Chennai.
