KATHMANDU: Madhav Kumar Nepal-led group of former Communist Party of Nepal (UML) held a separate meeting prior to joining the Prachanda-Nepal faction’s Standing Committee meeting on Monday.

Leaders of the Nepal faction belonging to the UML are undergoing a difficult situation after the Supreme Court revived the former UML on Sunday.

The Prachanda-Nepal faction of NCP is holding its Standing Committee meeting this afternoon to discuss the changed political scenario of the country.

Madhav Nepal group which was not on good terms with the then UML Chairman KP Oli does not have the required number of lawmakers in the parliamentary party to split the party.

CPN-UML has 120 seats in the House of Representatives (HoR). Nepal requires at least 48 seats.

Currently, 33 lawmakers have been openly supporting Nepal, 62 lawmakers are in favor of Oli while the status of 25 lawmakers is still unclear. Nepal cannot split the party unless he takes them into confidence.

With the majority of the Central Committee and Parliamentary Party, if the action is taken against Nepal group by the Oli faction, Nepal, Jhala Nath Khanal including the lawmakers who support them will lose their memberships as lawmakers.

Similarly, the status of lawmakers Bidya Bhattarai elected to the HoR, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Bedu Ram Bhusal who were elected to the National Assembly following the unification has been unclear regarding which party they belong to.
