Leaders slam cabinet’s decision to dissolve Parliament

PM Oli's move "unconstitutional and undemocratic": Leaders

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai has termed Prime Minister KP Oli’s move to dissolve the House of Representatives as “unconstitutional” and “undemocratic”.

“This, in fact, is a reactionary step,” Dr Bhattarai said urging all political forces to fight back such an unconstitutional step of the government.

Dr Bhattarai’s reaction has come soon after PM Oli recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Rastriya Janamorcha Party Chitra Bahadur KC has criticized the cabinet’s decision terming it “regressive” and “unconstitutional”.

“The government and the Prime Minister should not have taken this step due to the party intra-party wrangling,” KC said.

Nepal’s main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) has come down heavily on the government for the move to recommend the dissolution of the House of Representatives (HoR).

Party Spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma said the party will fight such move.

Sharma termed the government’s move injudicious. “This is yet another move to fulfil Prime Minister KP Oli’s authoritarian aspiration,” he said.

According to him, the country would suffer with this move.

A meeting of the Cabinet held Sunday morning recommended for dissolution of the Parliament.

Likewise, NC influential youth leader Gagan Thapa, too, dubbed the cabinet’s decision as “undemocratic and unconstitutional”.

“There is a provision in the Constitution of running the parliament for five years,” he said adding, “PM’s decision to dissolve the parliament is unconstitutional and undemocratic.”
