New height of Mt Everest being made public today



KATHMANDU: The new height of the Mt Everest is being made public today. The government for the first time measured the height of the highest peak of the world on its own and making it public.

The Survey Department under the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation measured the height taking two years and spending Rs 130 million.

The government took the undertaking in the wake of the international debate that the height of the world’s highest peak could be changed after the Gorkha Earthquake of 2015.

The Survey Department has estimated that the height has slightly increased than the present- 8,848 meter. However the increased height is not ascertained.

A news conference is being organized at 1:30pm to make public the new height of the Everest, according to Information Officer at Department, Damodar Dhakal.
