We are happy to support in post-earthquake reconstruction : Indian Foreign Secretary

GORKHA: The Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has said India was happy to support Nepal in the post-earthquake reconstruction.

Inaugurating the newly-constructed building of three schools rebuilt with the assistance provided by the Government of India here today, he said this type of cooperation would further deepen the centuries-old Indo-Nepal relations.

He said that India has been helping in the reconstruction of private houses, community schools, and health posts damaged by the Gorkha Earthquake in 2015, adding that India would always extend cooperation to Nepal.

Stating that he felt honored to come to Gorkha, the historical place from where Nepal’s unification campaign was launched, he said, “Nepalis are known as brave people throughout the world. I feel honored to come to a place from where the then king Prithvi Narayan Shah had initiated the unification of Nepal.”

The buildings of Mahalaxmi Secondary School, the Ratna Laxmi Secondary School, and the Tara Secondary School at Gorkha Municipality have been reconstructed with the cooperation of the Government of India.

Indian Foreign Secretary Shringla inaugurated the three school buildings amidst a function organized at the Mahalaxmi Secondary School at Laxmi Bazaar.

Ambassador of India to Nepal, Vinay Mohan Kwatra among other Indian officials were also present on the occasion.

After the Gorkha Earthquake of 2015, India had committed to construct a total of 50 thousand houses in Gorkha and Nuwakot districts. Forty thousand 500 houses have been constructed and handed over to the beneficiaries in both districts so far. Twenty-five thousand 17 houses have been constructed in Gorkha district alone.

As part of its post-earthquake assistance to Nepal, the Government of India has substantially fulfilled its commitment in the housing sector with over 46,500 houses handed over to beneficiaries in Gorkha and Nuwakot districts.

India is also working with the Government of Nepal on the reconstruction of 147 health posts and hospitals in ten districts of Nepal under a grant of US $ 50 million and 28 cultural heritage sites in 8 districts of Nepal under another grant of US $ 50 million.
