300 private hostels shut down due to COVID-19 in capital

KATHMANDU: Private hostels operating in the Kathmandu Valley have been hit hard due to coronavirus pandemic.

Most of the hostels in the capital have been shut down after the students retured home since the government imposed lockdown nationwide to curb coronavirus on March 24.

Those who were from far-off places returned home after the schools and colleges in the capital were shut down, as a result of which,  the hostel operators have been unable to pay the building rents.

Some hostel owners have abandoned the business.

According to Govinda Giri, former General Secretary of Hostel Association of Nepal, as many as 300 hotels have been shut down due to coronavirus pandemic.

Giri further said only those who received 50 percent concession in building rent are in operation, currently.
