KATHMANDU: Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya is being commemorated by organizing various literary programs across the country on the occasion of his 207th birth anniversary on Monday .

Born at Ramgha in Tanahun district on July 13, 1814, Acharya was the writer to translate great epic Ramayan from Sanskrit to Nepali.

Despite having other contemporary poets in the country during his time, he is revered and honored with the title of Adikavi (The First Poet) of the Nepali language.

Couplets of great epic Ramayan are still popular in the present-day Nepali society.  Besides, Acharya’s other literary works include Prashnottar, Bhaktamala, Badhushiksha, Ram Gita.

His writings are simple yet strong with a sense of religion, sense of simplicity and the warmth of his country, unlike the style of other Nepali poets.

Belonging to a wealthy family, he never had any financial trouble in his life until he met a grass cutter who inspired him to do something that would leave a mark in the society.

Bhanu Jayanti is also celebrated in Nepali speaking regions including Darjeeling and Sikkim.

Bhanu municipality in Tanahun district has given a public holiday today.
