KATHMANDU: Nearly 590 foreign nationals from 38 countries remain unaccounted for following the flooding, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday.
Speaking at a regular press briefing at the ministry, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudel Chhetri said some bodies that had remained in the water for a prolonged period and could not be identified had been temporarily buried.
He said DNA samples had been collected from each body and preserved in accordance with international protocols so that families can identify the deceased and carry out final rites in the future.
The ministry also said Nepal would require significant international assistance for rehabilitation and reconstruction after a detailed assessment of the needs arising from the disaster.
