KATHMANDU: The government has begun seeking international assistance to speed up the identification of people who remain missing or have been affected by the recent floods.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri said Nepal had requested technical assistance from Singapore to support the identification process.
Nepal has also sought DNA testing assistance from the United States and high-capacity equipment from China and Singapore, according to the ministry. The government expects to receive additional specialised equipment from Japan and South Korea soon.
Rescue and relief materials have already arrived in Nepal from India, China, the United States, France, the United Arab Emirates and South Korea.
An Indian special rescue team has been deployed in the affected areas, while a South Korean team is also involved in the response operation.
The government said international assistance would now be needed not only for rescue and relief but also for the reconstruction and restoration of houses, roads, bridges and hydropower projects damaged by the floods.
