KATHMANDU: Ten climbers, including renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja (Nims dai) and Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, have been reported missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan.
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), the missing climbers include six Nepalis, one Pakistani, one Omani, one American, and one Chinese national.
The six missing Nepali climbers are Nirmal Purja, Pur Bahadur Gurung, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, Ngawang Thindu Sherpa, and Gyalu Sherpa.
The other missing climbers have been identified as Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthi of Oman, Sohail Sakhi of Pakistan, Wang Zhong of China, and Mallory Gais of the United States.
In a statement issued on Friday, the ACP said that search and rescue operations are underway under the coordination of its Senior Vice President, Karrar Haidri. Two rescue helicopters from the Pakistan Army’s Aviation Wing, along with rescue personnel and specialized equipment, have been mobilized for the operation.
“Every effort is being made to deploy helicopter support and all available rescue resources as soon as weather and operational conditions permit,” the statement said.
