Active monsoon raises risk of heavy rain today

KATHMANDU: Monsoon activity remains strong across Nepal, with the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology warning of isolated heavy rainfall in the hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces today.

The weather office has also forecast moderate rain in many parts of the country, snowfall in some high-altitude regions, and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in several provinces during both daytime and nighttime hours.

Officials have cautioned that the continuing monsoon conditions could trigger landslides, flash floods, and debris flows, particularly in vulnerable hilly and mountainous areas. Rivers and streams may swell rapidly after intense downpours, increasing the risk of local flooding and road disruptions.

The Department has urged residents, travelers, and local authorities to remain on alert and follow weather updates and disaster preparedness advisories.

The adverse weather could affect transportation, agricultural activities, health services, and mountain tourism, especially in areas already experiencing saturated soil and unstable slopes due to recent rainfall.
