SUNSARI: A seven-point agreement has been reached between the Government of Nepal and the families of the victims in connection with the Kaptanganj incident in Sunsari, in which two youths were killed.
The agreement was signed late Thursday night between Home Minister Sudan Gurung, representing the government, and the parents of Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta, who died in police firing.
According to Dewanganj Rural Municipality Chairperson Bechan Prasad Mehta, the agreement was signed by Home Minister Gurung, Om Prakash’s father Krishnadev Mehta, and Jay Prakash’s father Naresh Mehta.
Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta were killed in police firing in Kaptanganj, Ward No. 3 of Dewanganj Rural Municipality, Sunsari.
Under the agreement, the Government of Nepal will immediately begin the process of declaring the two deceased as martyrs and will provide Rs 1 million in relief assistance to each of their families.
The agreement also includes a commitment to conduct a fair and effective investigation into the incident and to take strict legal action against those found responsible.
In addition, the government has agreed to immediately initiate the necessary investigation into the legal status of the madrasa located in Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3. The government will also provide employment opportunities to one eligible member from each of the two bereaved families.
Furthermore, the recommendations and suggestions contained in the report of the investigation committee formed to study the incident will be implemented as soon as possible in accordance with the law.
Another point of the agreement provides for the construction of a memorial park at a suitable location within the rural municipality in coordination with the local government in memory of the deceased.
Following the agreement, the last rites of the deceased are scheduled to be performed at 2:00 pm today.
