Market monitoring conducted in Terhathum to curb tobacco sales

TEHRATHUM: The District Administration Office carried out market monitoring activities in Tehrathum to ensure compliance with regulations governing the sale and distribution of tobacco products on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.

The monitoring team, led by Chief District Officer Bandana Rai, interacted with local traders and informed them about legal standards related to tobacco sales, distribution practices, and the health risks associated with tobacco use.

During the awareness campaign, Health Assistant Indra Prasad Pokharel of Myanglung Municipality stated that tobacco products contain more than 7,000 chemicals, including around 250 harmful substances and over 70 known carcinogens.

Business owners were instructed to display mandatory warning notices, refrain from selling tobacco products to individuals under 18 years of age and pregnant women, and avoid selling such products within 100 meters of educational and health institutions.

The monitoring team also inspected compliance with the ban on smoking in public places and the payment of applicable excise duties.

The joint monitoring team included representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the District Health Office, all three security agencies, and the Federation of Nepali Journalists.
