UML Secretariat meets again after Oli’s arrest, plans further protests

KATHMANDU: The Secretariat meeting of the CPN-UML is underway for the second time following the arrest of party Chair KP Sharma Oli last Saturday.

Oli, who was arrested from Bhaktapur’s Gundu area, is currently undergoing treatment at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Immediately after his arrest, the party had convened a Secretariat meeting under the chairmanship of Vice Chair Ram Bahadur Thapa.

Amid evolving political developments, the party has again called a Secretariat meeting on Tuesday at noon to discuss the situation.

According to a Secretariat member at the meeting venue in Chyasal, the meeting, chaired by Thapa, is likely to decide on additional protest programs against Oli’s arrest.

The meeting is also expected to deliberate on the leadership of the UML Parliamentary Party.

Speaking on the ongoing discussions, party secretary Mahesh Basnet said the meeting is focusing on the government’s investigation and what the party terms as retaliatory actions against leaders, including Oli, in connection with allegations of suppression during the Gen-Z movement in September 2025.

Basnet stated that the Secretariat will announce further protest programs against what he described as “revenge-driven actions” targeting party Chair Oli.

“The UML Secretariat meeting is being held to decide additional protest programs against the retaliatory activities directed at Chair KP Sharma Oli,” Basnet said.
