DANG: A woman in Dang died after learning that her 22-year-old son had been murdered in Kathmandu, leaving her husband to cope with the deaths of both his wife and eldest son.
Romaharsha Kalathoki, a resident of Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City-17, had been in Malaysia to support his family and fund the education of his two sons. His wife, 38-year-old Bina Kalathoki, was at home in Dang when she received news that their eldest son, Basanta Kalathoki, had been killed.
Basanta, who was staying at a hostel in Kathmandu while preparing to go abroad for employment, was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon inside Valley Boys Hostel in Shankhamul, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-10, two days ago. He was taken unconscious to the Civil Service Hospital in Minbhawan for treatment but died during treatment.
According to neighbor Durga Khatri, Bina died at around 3 pm at her home in Janapriya Tol, Haridwar, Ghorahi, shortly after learning about her son’s death.
“The locals informed her about the brutal murder of her 22-year-old son in Kathmandu, and she could not bear the shock,” Khatri said.
District Police Chief SP Deepak Shrestha said a police team reached the scene after receiving information about Bina’s death. Following the completion of the necessary legal procedures, her body was taken to the Rapti Academy of Health Sciences in Ghorahi for postmortem. The body has been kept at the hospital’s morgue.
Ghorahi-17 Ward Chairman Ramlautan Chaudhary said Bina, who was devastated by the news of her son’s murder, died at home. Her 11-year-old younger son, Shishir, was at home at the time and has since been placed under the care of his grandfather.
“Everything has been put on hold as her husband is returning from Malaysia on Monday,” Chaudhary said. “The youngest son, Shishir, has been staying with his grandfather nearby. It would not have been appropriate to immediately convey such devastating news to him while he was alone at home.”
Romaharsha is returning from Malaysia after receiving news of the deaths of his son and wife. According to his neighbor Khatri, he has booked a flight for Monday.
Basanta had reportedly been staying at the Kathmandu hostel while learning French and preparing to travel to France for employment. He frequently traveled between Kathmandu and his home in Dang.
Police have arrested 20-year-old Pramit Patel and 18-year-old Shekhar Yadav, both from Kalaiya-3, Bara, who were staying at the same hostel, in connection with Basant’s death. Police allege that the two attacked Basanta on the head and neck before he was taken to hospital in an unconscious condition. Shekhar was arrested in Kathmandu and Pramit in Makawanpur on Saturday. Police are continuing their investigation. The Kalathoki family had migrated to Ghorahi from Belbas in Pyuthan.
