Snow removal underway on blocked Korala Road

MUSTANG: The snow that has accumulated on the upper Mustang road connecting Kagbeni to Korala, which has been impassable since Wednesday due to heavy snowfall, is now being cleared.

Snow removal efforts on the Korala road commenced on Friday. As of this morning, the Nepal–China Korala road has been cleared and reopened for traffic up to Lomanthang. This operation was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the District Administration Office in Lomanthang and the Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality, utilizing equipment from the Kaligandaki Corridor (Beni–Jomsom–Korala) road project to clear snow from Chhusang to Lomanthang in Mustang.

Armed Police Inspector Suraj Shrestha from the Border Outpost (BOP) provided updates on the situation. He stated that the armed police team, equipped with tools from the corridor road project, has been actively engaged in snow removal along the Korala border road.

The heavy snowfall that hit Upper Mustang on Tuesday night led to over two feet of snow accumulation on the Kagbeni–Korala road, which resulted in the complete blockage of the Jomsom–Korala route.

Local residents, security personnel, tourists, traders, and individuals monitoring polling centers and stations for the election are currently facing challenges due to the heavy snowfall obstructing the Korala road in Upper Mustang.

On Friday, the Korala road project announced that excavation equipment is being deployed to clear the accumulated snow from the section of the road between Chhusang and Upper Korala in Mustang.
