KATHMANDU: Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has said that it is necessary for the Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) Nepal to increase the quality and effectiveness of its broadcast content by embracing innovative technology and addressing growing public expectations.
At a special function organized today on the occasion of the 41st anniversary of Nepal Television (NTV) under PSB Nepal here today, he said that it is indispensable to continuously expand content, reach, presentation and technology in the current digital age.
“Reaching the people through digital media, not limited to traditional radio or television, is not only today’s challenge, but also an opportunity to convey the voice of the nation to the new generation,” said Vice President Yadav. “The main responsibility of government media is to strengthen the voice of the nation, provide citizens with informative, educational and inspiring content and protect democratic values.”
Stating that Nepal Television and Radio Nepal have been continuously contributing to the promotion of national unity, social harmony, cultural diversity and democratic values, Vice President Yadav said all sides should contribute to making public service broadcasting stronger, more effective and people-oriented.
In another context, Vice President Yadav said that the role of the media is very important in the flow of accurate information related to elections, increasing voter awareness and creating a peaceful environment for the elections.
Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Laxmi Kumari Basnet, said that Nepal Television has been working to connect civil rights, freedom of expression and social responsibility through contributions such as delivering truthful information to the general public, increasing public awareness, and preserving culture and social transformation.
Public Service Broadcasting Nepal’s Executive Director, Dr Mahendra Bista, said that public broadcasting institutions are being operated in line with international norms and national needs.
Meanwhile, trade union leaders at Nepal Television (NTV) drew the management’s attention to the need for further institutional strengthening and for guaranteeing career enhancement opportunities for employees.
On the occasion, the Vice President presented Lifetime Service Awards to employees who have served continuously for 40, 30, and 20 years at NTV. Likewise, various employees, journalists, advertising agencies, and programme producers were awarded for their excellence in their respective fields.
The NTV was established on Magh 17, 2041 BS (January 30, 1985).
In its capacity as the national broadcasting institution, NTV has now reached a global audience with five channels, including a separate English-language channel, “NTV World,” which was launched this year. Its terrestrial broadcasting covers 52 percent of the geographical area and reaches 72 percent of the population.
According to PSC Acting Chief Administrative Officer Bishnu Ram Neupane, NTV’s news services and programmes are inclusive: daily news is broadcast in seven languages, weekly programmes in 25 languages, and weekly news in an additional two languages. (RSS)
