EC unveils sample ballot papers for upcoming HoR elections; focus on voter education

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has officially released sample ballot papers for various districts and constituencies in preparation for the House of Representatives (HoR) elections, which are scheduled to take place on March 5 .

The Commission has made these samples public across all seven provinces to streamline the voting process. According to the EC, distinct ballot designs have been created for districts with a single constituency versus those with multiple constituencies. These samples are specifically intended for voter education campaigns to ensure citizens are familiar with the layout before heading to the polls.

Election Commission Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai stated that the physical size of the ballot papers has been adjusted based on the number of candidates contesting in each area. Constituencies with a high volume of candidates will feature larger ballot papers, while those with fewer contestants will utilize smaller, more compact versions.

In Karnali Province, the Commission has released samples for single-constituency districts including Salyan, Dolpa, Mugu, Jumla, Kalikot, Humla, Jajarkot, and Rukum West. Additionally, samples for Dailekh and Surkhet, which both house two constituencies, have also been made available to the public.

The rollout also covers Sudurpashchim Province, where single-constituency districts such as Bajura, Bajhang, Doti, Darchula, Baitadi, and Dadeldhura now have their respective samples. The Commission further released designs for Achham, which has two constituencies, Kanchanpur with three, and Kailali, which consists of five constituencies.

Amidst these preparations for the First-Past-The-Post system, the Commission confirmed that the printing of ballot papers for the Proportional Representation (PR) system has already been completed.
