Birgunj imports food items worth Rs 12 Billion in six months



BIRGUNJ: Food items worth Rs 11.57 billion were imported through the Birgunj customs point during the first six months of the current fiscal year. This represents a decline of Rs 210 million compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.

According to Birgunj Customs Office Information Officer Uday Singh Bista, imports of food items have decreased slightly in the current fiscal year. In the first six months of the previous fiscal year, 16 types of food items worth Rs 11.78 billion were imported through the checkpoint.

Rice accounted for the largest share of imports. During the review period, 154.3 million kilograms of rice worth Rs 5.68 billion were imported, compared to rice imports worth Rs 6.9 billion in the corresponding period last year.

Maize imports totaled Rs 3.41 billion during the first six months of the current fiscal year. In addition, rice products worth Rs 1.61 billion and malt worth Rs 330 million were imported. Imports of sorghum, millet, and other food grains amounted to Rs 237.3 million during the period.
