KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is set to begin a nationwide campaign targeting municipalities from October 6, with its central leaders and lawmakers visiting local levels ahead of the upcoming local elections.
According to RSP Joint General Secretary Nisha Dangi, the campaign will focus not only on listening to citizens but also on communicating the party’s views and plans to them.
“We are not only coming to your doorsteps to listen to your views, but this time we are also coming to your doorsteps to share and explain some of our views,” Dangi said in a video message. “All central members and MPs are coming to your municipalities.”
According to Dangi, the campaign has two main objectives. First, the party aims to explain the functioning of local governments and the process for selecting candidates to contest the upcoming local elections.
Second, it plans to inform citizens about the initiatives taken by the parliament and the government during the six months since the formation of the current government.
Dangi said local governments are the institutions most closely connected to people’s daily lives and development needs. She said the campaign would also seek to explain the democratic process for selecting local leadership.
“Our other important objective is to explain to the general public how the RSP can advance capable, honest and leadership-ready candidates for the upcoming local elections in Falgun,” Dangi said.
The RSP has said candidates will be selected through its Candidate Club Leadership Academy and a democratic selection process under the candidate selection framework it has previously proposed.
The RSP said nearly six months have passed since the formation of the current government and that the campaign will provide citizens with information about policy initiatives taken by parliament and the government during this period.
The party said it will also present information on the implementation of commitments made to citizens and outline its plans for the coming days. “As part of the campaign, our MPs and central members will reach all 753 municipalities in all 77 districts from October 6,” Dangi said.
She said the campaign was not solely aimed at preparing for the elections but was also intended as a democratic exercise to promote greater accountability in local governments and encourage citizen participation in the selection of local leadership.
