KATHMANDU: Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has said the international community has expressed strong interest in supporting Nepal’s post-Bhotekoshi flood reconstruction efforts and its fight against the climate crisis.
Khanal made the remarks while speaking to journalists at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Wednesday after returning from the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He said the international community expressed concern over the devastation caused by the Bhotekoshi flood and solidarity with those affected during meetings held on the sidelines of the General Assembly, as well as in bilateral discussions.
“Everyone expressed concern over the damage caused by the Bhotekoshi flood and solidarity with the suffering in Nepal,” Khanal said. “In all my formal and informal meetings, questions were raised about how the international community could help Nepal overcome the difficulties it is facing.”
Khanal said various countries and international agencies had shown interest in supporting Nepal’s post-flood reconstruction, while the global community also appeared increasingly concerned about the climate crisis and its impact on Nepal.
“Overall, Nepal is facing disasters caused by the climate crisis, and I found the international community to be in solidarity with us on this issue,” he said. “I found that everyone was particularly interested in the way Nepal presented its challenges and concerns on the international stage.”
Khanal said the Prime Minister’s address to the UN General Assembly, along with Nepal’s participation in high-level meetings, helped further highlight the country’s national interests and its call for climate justice on the international stage.
