NUWAKOT: Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has said that Nepali citizens stranded in Kerung, China, due to the Bhotekoshi floods will be brought back to Nepal through an alternative route.
Khanal, who visited the flood-affected area of Dhunge in Bidur Municipality-1 on Sunday, said that around 1,000 Nepalis were believed to be stranded in Kerung based on preliminary information.
“We have received information that around 1,000 Nepalis are in Kerung. We will bring them back to Nepal through an alternative route,” he said.
According to Khanal, the government has requested the Chinese side to reopen the Tatopani border point in Sindhupalchok and allow the use of the Korala border point in Mustang as alternative routes for returning the stranded Nepalis.
He also said Chinese and Indian experts had been requested to assist in rescuing people trapped inside a hydropower project tunnel after it became clear that additional international expertise was needed.
“If necessary, assistance can also be sought from other countries,” Khanal said. “We are receiving commitments of support from the international community and will seek assistance as needed.”
