KATHMANDU: Authorities have imposed curfews and prohibitory orders in parts of Sunsari, Siraha, Dhanusha and Parsa as tensions triggered by Sunday’s deadly incident in Kaptanganj, Sunsari, continue to spread across the Madhesh region.
District administrations in the four districts said the restrictions have been enforced at different times and locations based on the local security situation to maintain law and order.
In Sunsari, the curfew imposed across 10 local units on Tuesday night remains in effect. The situation worsened after the unrest spread into Madhes on Wednesday.
In Siraha, one youth was killed in police firing in Golbazar, while incidents of arson and vandalism have been reported in several locations.
A curfew has been enforced in the Golbazar area from 2 pm until further notice, covering the stretch from Karsaha Khola to Chauharwa Chowk along the East-West Highway and from Sainik Chowk in Ward No. 6 to the Gymnasium area in Ward No. 4.
A separate curfew has also been imposed in Lahan from 4 pm until further notice, covering areas from Balan Khola in the east to Saraswati Khola and the Batika Hotel area in the west, and extending from Khutti Khola in the north to approximately 500 metres south of the East-West Highway.
In Dhanusha, prohibitory orders came into effect at 3:30 pm across all wards of Janakpur Sub-metropolitan City, as well as Laxminiya Rural Municipality and Nagarain Municipality.
In Parsa, a curfew has been imposed in parts of Birgunj Metropolitan City from 5 pm on Thursday until 6 am on Friday. The restricted zone covers the area from Pratima Chowk–Bus Park Bypass Road west to Tilave Bridge, north to Gandak Chowk and south to Shankaracharya Gate.
Local administrations have urged residents to fully comply with the curfew and prohibitory orders, avoid believing rumours and cooperate in maintaining peace, public order and communal harmony.
