KATHMANDU: US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu this evening.
Gor currently serves as the US ambassador to India and is regarded as a close associate of Trump. In addition to his ambassadorial role, he has also been assigned the responsibility of special envoy for South and Central Asia.
During his visit, Gor is expected to hold meetings with Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, as well as other officials and political leaders.
According to sources, Gor has also requested a meeting with Prime Minister Balen Shah. However, the prime minister has yet to decide whether to meet him. Gor is the most senior US official to visit Nepal since the formation of the Rastriya Swatantra Party-led government on March 27.
In the past, visiting foreign diplomats, regardless of rank, would typically meet Nepal’s top leadership, including the prime minister. However, this practice appears to be shifting under the current administration.
Notably, Prime Minister Shah also declined to meet Samir Paul Kapur, who visited Nepal for three days starting April 20.
Gor is also expected to convey Washington’s willingness to support Nepal’s new government and promote investment, provided necessary legal reforms are implemented.
