Martyrs’ Day being observed nationwide today

KATHMANDU: Martyrs’ Day is being observed across the country today with various commemorative programs to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation and its people.

The day commemorates the four national martyrs, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand, Gangalal Shrestha and Shukraraj Shastri, who were executed for raising their voices against the Rana regime in the struggle for democracy in Nepal.

Their sacrifices played a crucial role in inspiring the movement that ultimately ended the autocratic Rana rule and paved the way for democracy.

Martyrs’ Day is observed annually on January 30 to remember the contributions of martyrs from different periods who fought for democracy, freedom and social justice. To mark the occasion, Martyrs’ Week is observed, during which various programs are organized nationwide.

Historically, martyr Shukraraj Shastri was executed at Pachali in Teku; Dharmabhakta Mathema was executed at Siphal; and Gangalal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand were executed at Shobhabhagawati on by the then Rana rulers.
