KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has questioned the government’s handling of major corruption cases, saying it is ironic that an administration elected on promises of good governance and prosperity appears to be backing down on such cases.
Bhattarai expressed his views on social media alongside photos of Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane. He raised questions about the country’s judicial system and the implementation of laws.
Arguing that all actions in a democracy should be governed by law, Bhattarai said the existing system appears to hold ordinary and less-connected people accountable while allowing those involved in more serious wrongdoing to avoid action.
“What should we do with our judicial system where a hungry man is caught and punished for stealing cucumbers from a garden without leaving any evidence, while a full-bodied man is found innocent for breaking through a wall and stealing diamonds without sufficient evidence?” Bhattarai wrote.
He further argued that good governance and prosperity cannot be achieved unless what he described as groups that have repeatedly exploited the country’s resources are brought to an end.
