POKHARA: A mother and her two-year-old daughter died after being swept away by a flash flood triggered by heavy rain in Pokhara on Friday evening.
Twenty-six-year-old Sushma Dahal of Dhungepatan, Pokhara-30, and her daughter Ranika Dahal died after being swept away at the intersection leading to Janapriya Campus in Harkachowk, Pokhara Metropolitan City-17, according to Kaski Assistant Chief District Officer Chitrangat Baral.
The mother and daughter were rescued and taken to Gandaki Medical College. Sushma died on Friday night, while Ranika died on Saturday morning.
Sushma’s husband, Kamal Dahal, was travelling with his wife and daughter on a scooter from Birauta to Prithvi Chowk. He stopped the scooter at Harkachowk after the flash flood intensified on the road due to heavy rainfall.
As the family got off the scooter, Ranika was swept away by the floodwater and carried into a roadside drain. Sushma followed the drain in an attempt to rescue her daughter but was also swept away by the strong current.
The mother and daughter were carried about two kilometres downstream toward Birauta. After Kamal called for help, local residents and police personnel joined the rescue effort.
They were eventually found unconscious in a canal in Birauta, Pokhara-17, and taken to the hospital, where they later died.
