KATHMANDU: The last rites of senior leader of the Nepali Congress and former deputy prime minister Gopalman Shrestha were performed at Pashupati Aryaghat today.
NC president Gagan Kumar Thapa draped the party flag on Shrestha’s dead body and paid tribute.
Shrestha’s son consigned him to fire. Senior leaders of the NC reached Aryaghat to pay tribute to the late leader Shrestha.
Senior leader Shrestha’s body was earlier kept at NC party office, Sanepa, Kathmandu. The leaders of various political parties thronged there to pay their respects to the late one.
Shrestha had passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur on Tuesday. He was 79. The late leader was active in NC politics since his student days. He played a leading role in various struggles and movements for the establishment, restoration and strengthening of democracy.
While discharging duty for party campaign in various capacities, he had to face nearly six years in prison for several times. He was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Syangja district in 2048 BS, 2056 BS, and 2064 BS.
He was also elected as a Constituent Assembly member through the proportional representative system in 2070 BS.
The leader had become the deputy prime minister and minister for physical planning and construction, the minister for forest and environment, and minister for commerce and education. (RSS)
