KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Thapa on Wednesday questioned the government’s handling of the Sunsari situation during the ongoing all-party meeting at Singha Durbar.
Speaking after attending the meeting called by Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane to discuss current issues, including the Sunsari incident, Thapa said the Nepali Congress had sought clear answers from the government.
“We have raised questions to the government through the respected chair. What is the government doing right now? Where is it?” he said.
Expressing dissatisfaction over what he described as a lack of coordination, Thapa said the government’s role should go beyond security measures and public statements.
“The government should not be limited to gunfire or to status updates. The government is not only a guardian; it must also provide leadership. The greatest strength of a leader is the ability to collaborate, to trust others, and to earn the trust of others,” he said.
Thapa argued that the Prime Minister should immediately take the initiative to build broader political consensus.
“At this time, the Prime Minister should immediately call an all-party meeting. The Prime Minister should also meet the President. We need dialogue with provincial and local governments, and we must create a foundation for joint efforts by all sides,” he said.
He expressed appreciation that the RSP had convened the meeting in a timely manner despite the government not doing so. “We have informed the meeting about the role the Nepali Congress has been playing during this period,” he added.
Thapa said religious tolerance and social harmony are among the fundamental strengths of Nepali society. He also proposed that similar all-party meetings be held at local levels, including in Sunsari, and said he was ready to contribute to such efforts.
