Govt to restructure health insurance system, aims 90% coverage in 3 years

KATHMANDU: The government has announced a major restructuring of the health insurance programme.

Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle made the announcement while presenting the budget for fiscal year 2026/27 in the joint session of the Federal Parliament on Friday.

He said scattered social health security programmes and health-related liabilities will be integrated into a unified payment system to improve efficiency.

The government expects that within the next three years, up to 90 percent of Nepali citizens will be brought under health insurance coverage through universal expansion of the scheme, significantly reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses.

He also announced that a National Trauma Policy will be formulated to reduce casualties and economic losses caused by road accidents and emergency trauma cases.
