Budget to focus on good governance and economic revitalization

KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle is presenting the executive budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year 2026/27 in a joint sitting of the Federal Parliament today.

As per the constitutional provision of presenting the national budget on Jestha 15, the government’s annual estimates of income and expenditure are being tabled in the federal legislature this afternoon.

The budget is expected to focus on economic revitalization, boosting private sector confidence, increasing capital expenditure and expanding employment opportunities. A senior official at the Ministry of Finance said the government is preparing to unveil a budget in the range of Rs 1.890 trillion to Rs 2 trillion.

The official added that the budget will prioritize good governance and efforts to revive the economy.

The National Planning Commission had initially set the budget ceiling at Rs 1,890 billion for the upcoming fiscal year. However, the National Revenue Estimates Committee revised the ceiling upward following a government request, citing difficulties in preparation within the earlier limit.

Officials said the budget has been prepared based on the government’s 100-point governance reform action plan, policy and programmes, and the priorities outlined in the Appropriation Bill presented in Parliament.

Inputs and discussions from lawmakers in both houses of Parliament, along with the government’s governance roadmap, economic reform agenda, production enhancement, and service delivery improvements, have also been incorporated.

According to discussions, the budget is expected to include a possible salary increase for government employees, a review of certain tax rates, business-friendly policies, and programs to promote productive sectors. Priority areas include information technology, small and medium enterprises, and investment promotion.
