MCA-Nepal begins upgrade of 40km Dhan Khola–Lamahi road section

DANG: Millennium Challenge Account Nepal (MCA-Nepal) has officially commenced the upgrading of the 40-kilometer Dhan Khola–Lamahi section of the East-West Highway.

The project introduces modern construction techniques, Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) and Superpave, for the first time in Nepal, aiming to enhance road quality, durability, and sustainability. These methods are expected to create longer-lasting road surfaces by reusing existing asphalt materials while reducing environmental impact.

The upgraded road will be widened to 12 meters, including a 7-meter carriageway and 2.5-meter shoulders on both sides.

Addressing the program, Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya welcomed the adoption of advanced technologies, stating that the project would improve safety and reliability while boosting economic opportunities for local businesses, farmers, and entrepreneurs.

Similarly, U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires Scott Urbon described the project as a milestone in Nepal–U.S. partnership under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Nepal Compact.

“Through the MCC Nepal Compact, we are investing in high-quality, durable infrastructure that will lower transportation costs, improve safety, and connect communities to markets and opportunities,” he said, highlighting shared commitment to sustainable economic growth.

Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport and MCA-Nepal Board Member Sushil Babu Dhakal said that the project complements the Government of Nepal’s broader infrastructure plans and reflects a commitment to resilient development.

MCC Deputy Resident Country Director Sanjay Poudyal said the initiative demonstrates MCC’s focus on building cost-effective and long-lasting infrastructure using advanced technologies.

MCA-Nepal Executive Director Khadga Bahadur Bisht termed the project a significant step under the Road Maintenance Project of the MCC Nepal Compact. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring efficient, transparent, and high-quality implementation.

The Road Maintenance Project is a key component of the MCC Nepal Compact, aimed at reducing transportation costs and improving road conditions across the country.
