Home Ministry sends Gen-Z Probe Commission Report to police for implementation

The government has forwarded the report of the inquiry commission, led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, to the Kathmandu District Police Complex for implementation. The Commission, formed to investigate the incidents that occurred during the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9, 2025, had earlier submitted its report to the government led by then Prime Minister Sushila Karki. According to SSP Ramesh Thapa, chief of the Kathmandu District Police Complex, the Home Ministry has now officially handed over the report for execution.

 

Oli and Lekhak remanded to custody for five days

The Kathmandu District Court has granted permission to keep former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak in custody for five days for investigation. Both were presented before the court on Sunday after being arrested on Saturday from Katunje and Gundu. The government has accused them in connection with deaths that occurred during the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9, 2025. Authorities have filed charges related to homicide, leading to their detention for investigation.

Police launch money laundering investigation against three former PMs

Nepal Police has launched an investigation into the assets of three former prime ministers, two former ministers, and their families. According to police sources, the probe, initiated based on a letter from the Money Laundering Investigation Department, targets the movable and immovable properties and sources of income of former Prime Ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba, KP Sharma Oli, and Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, as well as former ministers Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba and Deepak Khadka and their families. The investigation has also extended to Arju Rana’s brother, Bhushan Rana.

Former Home Minister Lekhak produced in court

Former Home Minister and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak, who was arrested on Saturday on charges of suppressing the Gen-Z movement, was produced in the Kathmandu District Court today. He was presented in court today since Saturday was a public holiday. Former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli is also being produced in court today. On September 8 and9, 2025, a total of 76 people, including three policemen, died when the Gen-Z protest turned violent. More than 2,400 protesters were seriously injured during the incident.

Former Minister Deepak Khadka arrested

Former Minister Deepak Khadka and Nepali Congress leader has been taken into custody. Police have confirmed his arrest. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the police took him into custody on Sunday morning from Budhanilkantha, police sources said. The arrest follows a request from the Money Laundering Investigation Department, which had sent a letter to Police Headquarters to investigate Khadka. He has been taken into custody for questioning based on that request.

Supreme Court orders Lamichhane’s petition against indictment withdrawal to be heard by full bench

The Supreme Court of Nepal has ordered that the writ petition filed by Rabi Lamichhane, chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, against the withdrawal of an indictment be presented before a full bench. A joint bench of Justices Binod Sharma and Abdul Aziz Musalman issued the order on Sunday. The petition challenges the withdrawal of the indictment filed against Lamichhane in connection with cooperative fraud, as well as charges related to organized crime and money laundering.

Secretariat claims Deepak Khadka detained without arrest warrant

The secretariat of Nepali Congress leader and former Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Deepak Khadka has objected to his arrest, claiming he was detained without an arrest warrant. According to the secretariat, Khadka was taken into custody by officials from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) at around 8:00 am on Sunday on the pretext of questioning, without prior notice or a warrant.

Police on standby from 8 am; additional teams deployed at possible protest sites in Kathmandu

In preparation for the demonstrations by the CPN-UML, the Nepal Police have placed personnel nationwide on standby duty from 8 am today, with patrols by the Armed Police Force also scheduled to begin. The UML has been protesting since Saturday morning against the arrest of its chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. Both leaders were taken into custody in Bhaktapur on Saturday morning to implement the report of the Gen-Z Movement Inquiry Commission.

Clashes erupt between UML cadres and police in Babarmahal

Clashes broke out between supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) and police in the Babarmahal area during a protest demanding the release of party chair KP Sharma Oli. The confrontation occurred on Sunday as UML cadres marched from Maitighar Mandala toward New Baneshwor. Tensions escalated after a dispute broke out between protesters and police.

Kumar Ben appointed as Balen’s Chief Advisor, Asim Shah as Political Advisor

Kumar Ben (Kumar Benjankar) has been appointed as Prime Minister Balen Shah’s chief advisor, while Asim Shah will serve as his political advisor. Both Kumar and Asim are long-time close aides of Balen, having supported him since his tenure as mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Reports suggest that the collaboration between Balen and Rabi Lamichhane was shaped through discussions held at Kumar Ben’s residence in Lalitpur and Asim Shah’s office in Ghairidhara, Kathmandu.

Govt prosecutor seeks 10-day detention for Oli and Lekhak

The government prosecutor has requested that CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, both arrested on Saturday, be detained for 10 days while the investigation progresses. At the Kathmandu District Court, the prosecutor sought an extension, asking that the time limit for their detention be extended by at least 10 days to allow further investigation. Meanwhile, the defense lawyers for Oli and Lekhak urged the court not to keep their clients in custody.

UML Chairman Oli under medical observation

Former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, who was admitted to the hospital on Saturday due to an irregular heartbeat, is currently under medical observation. Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital issued a statement regarding Oli’s condition, confirming that he is being monitored and treated by the medical team. “Our medical team is managing his treatment,” the hospital said, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Prachanda elected leader of NCP parliamentary party

Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, coordinator of Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has been elected as the leader of the parliamentary party. The decision was made during a meeting of the elected members of the House of Representatives at Parisdanda, Kathmandu, on Sunday. In the parliamentary elections held on March 5, the NCP won 17 seats, including 8 through direct elections and 9 through proportional representation.

Law Minister Gautam pays courtesy call on Chief Justice Raut

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam paid a courtesy call on Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut at his office today. The meeting was also attended by the judges of the Supreme Court. As per the constitution, the Law Minister serves as an ex-officio member of the Judicial Council.

Deuba family under scrutiny as asset probe intensifies

The government has initiated an investigation into the assets of former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, collecting details of properties owned by him and his family members. As part of the investigation, police have halted the demolition of a house within the Deuba residence complex in Budhanilkantha, citing concerns that potential evidence could be destroyed. A complaint had previously been filed with the Department of Money Laundering Investigation, accusing the Deuba family of amassing illegal wealth through the misuse of political power. Sources indicate that the investigation has progressed further, building on previously gathered evidence and documentation.

Sobha Pathak demands arrest of Mahesh Basnet

Sobha Pathak has approached the police, demanding the arrest of CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet. She had earlier filed a complaint accusing Basnet of rape. On Sunday morning, Pathak reached the Kathmandu District Police Complex and the Government Attorney’s Office, calling for Basnet’s immediate arrest. Pathak, also known as Januka Pathak, is a political activist and election candidate who gained public attention due to her legal and political actions against senior CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet.

Traffic resumes on BP Highway after two-day closure

Traffic on the BP Highway resumed at 6:00 am today following flooding in the Roshi River caused by Friday evening’s heavy rains. The District Police Office has urged travelers to exercise caution due to lingering adverse weather conditions, even though two-way traffic is now operational. The highway had been blocked for two days after the rains washed away even the temporary diversion in the Roshi area. Authorities have now reopened a temporary diversion after the river’s water level receded. Earlier, the office had completely halted vehicle movement until it was safe to reopen the road.

Rabi Lamichhane’s next court hearing scheduled for April 27

The Kathmandu District Court has scheduled the next hearing for Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane on April 27. According to District Court Information Officer Deepak Kumar Shrestha, the date was fixed in relation to Lamichhane’s case in the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud matter. Lamichhane visited the court today to confirm the schedule. The case stems from complaints filed by 690 savers of Swarnalaxmi Multi-Purpose Cooperative, totaling 93 separate complaints. Lamichhane is accused of embezzling cooperative funds, with a formal case lodged against him in the Kathmandu District Court.

Gold price surges by Rs 5,000, silver also rises in Nepali market

The price of gold, which had fallen by Rs 7,500 over the past two days, has surged again today, while silver has also become more expensive. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Federation, the price of gold increased by Rs 5,000 per tola today, reaching Rs 286,000 per tola. Last Friday, gold had dropped by Rs 4,600 per tola to reach Rs 281,000. Earlier, on Wednesday, the price of gold had risen by Rs 13,000 per tola, but then declined consecutively on Thursday and Friday.
