Traffic resumes on BP Highway after two-day closure

KAVREPALANCHOWK: Traffic on the BP Highway resumed at 6:00 am today following flooding in the Roshi River caused by Friday evening’s heavy rains.

The District Police Office has urged travelers to exercise caution due to lingering adverse weather conditions, even though two-way traffic is now operational.

The highway had been blocked for two days after the rains washed away even the temporary diversion in the Roshi area. Authorities have now reopened a temporary diversion after the river’s water level receded. Earlier, the office had completely halted vehicle movement until it was safe to reopen the road.

The floods had damaged about four kilometers of diversion between Chowkidanda and Nepalthok in the Roshi area. Efforts to construct and operate a temporary diversion began this morning with support from the Road Department, Nepal Police, Traffic Police, and local residents.

Temporary roads and diversions were initially built after the floods and landslides of September last year completely damaged the Chowkidanda-Nepalthok road section.

Friday’s floods and landslides affected multiple areas, including Biruwadanda, Kaldhanga, Chowkidanda, and Mangaltar, washing away roads along the highway.

Following the blockage, traffic had been stopped at the highway entrances at Kavrebhanjyang and Bhakunde in Dhulikhel, as well as at Nepalthok and Mangaltar, the main eastern entry points to the capital.
