Police arrest 92 in sweep operation across Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested 92 people during a special sweep operation conducted across Kathmandu district over the past 24 hours as part of efforts to curb criminal activities and maintain peace and security in the Kathmandu Valley.

According to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, the operation was carried out at various locations, targeting public spaces, public transport, areas surrounding government offices, and other crowded places.

Of those arrested, 84 are men and eight are women, police said. The arrests include people suspected of involvement in various criminal activities as well as convicted offenders who had been absconding.

Superintendent of Police Dan Bahadur Thapa, spokesperson for the District Police Range, Kathmandu, said the operation aimed to maintain public order, strengthen security, and prevent and control criminal activities.

He said police had intensified surveillance and checks in crowded areas, including public spaces, public transport, and the vicinity of government offices and public service centres.

The operation targeted individuals allegedly involved in physical assaults, public disturbances, harassment, theft, robbery, illegal intermediation, and intimidation or hooliganism, particularly in public spaces and on public transport, according to police.

13 convicted fugitives arrested

Police also arrested 13 people who had been convicted by courts and sentenced for various offences but had remained at large.

According to police, the operation prioritised locating long-absconding convicts whose court-imposed sentences had yet to be enforced.

The campaign aims not only to strengthen surveillance but also to curb criminal activities in public places, apprehend convicted fugitives, and ensure a safer environment for the public, police said.

Security checks and surveillance have been intensified in areas vulnerable to theft, robbery, and harassment, including public transport, bus terminals, crowded marketplaces, and the vicinity of government offices that attract large numbers of visitors.

Spokesperson Thapa said police personnel had been deployed with a focus on identifying and apprehending individuals suspected of criminal activities and bringing them to justice in accordance with the law.

Police expect the special security campaign to help reduce disruptive behaviour in public spaces, improve crime prevention, and enhance public confidence in security arrangements.

Further investigations are underway into the cases involving the arrested individuals, including their alleged involvement in criminal activities and the legal proceedings required in each case. Police said such surveillance and inspection campaigns would continue as part of efforts to maintain peace, strengthen security, and control crime.
